I assume that the 2 squares laid over each other show a new post in that forum/topic?

Why don't you keep the single green/pale ones for no new topic, and made a red version for new posts?

I find, currently, distinguishing between the 2, at a quick glance, tricky.

How about star-shapes for new replies, red for hot topics, poll icon for polls?

Thats more like it, just something with a bit more contrast will do the trick!

You will be able to scan the pages quickly and see which forums/topics have new posts in.
