Hi guys, well its been like 2 years since I posted something on a forum for people to critique etc, so here goes wink.gif

This design is for a task/project tracker system that we use at our company. The system itself is custom made etc, but its time to refresh the front end design/aesthetics of the thing.

I wanted to keep it simple and clean - this is being used by people on an hourly basis, so nothing harsh on the eyes!

VIEW DESIGN

The "Common Task Dashboard" area hasn't been finished - its going to be a new feature.

Please keep in mind, that it needs to be clean, easy on the eyes and above all functional.

Thanks, Tom

EDIT: I'd like to point out the navigation links at the top aren't finished either - they are just a place holder!

Thanks Meshach,

Its quite tricky to visualize it working, things always look a little different once coded into html (font rendering etc) - hopefully I'll get round to building a html mockup.

I also find, that dummy data never looks as good as real data, something else which can be improved once the html is done.

This is just a wireframe/theme idea, hopefully a solid base to build from.

I really like it, everything goes really well and it's laid out nicely. There's one thing i don't like about it however and i think it's a color thing although i'm not entirely sure. Could it be that the small dark red icon should be lighter to go with the rest of the design? I know it's very small - but it's something that caught my eye.

Very good job.

Thanks Jamie,

On one hand I agree with you - its a little dark compared to the rest of the design, I'll play around with another hex value.

On the other hand - you noticed it, its done its job!

Personally, I've love to see more colour introduced. Failing that, at least more contrast since at the moment it all seems far too light for something that will be used all of the time. More attention is called to the call-to-action items (ie. the buttons) which is fine for things that are important, like the Quick Job and Search items but not so good for perhaps the Hide buttons. The latter should certainly not outshine the contain associated with it.

Here's a quick impression of a direction I'd much rather see, but that's entirely personal opinion:

Peter, much appreciated. I do want to bring in a bit more contrast and colour - this was almost a 'canvas' to build upon, its a little bit greyscale so far.

One on my main areas of attention will be the middle block - the table. I am going to make it stand out a little more, as this should be the focal point of the design.

I've made a html mockup which I will share with you guys tomorrow, my files are at the office. I've made small amendments to the lower part of the design, a small restructure.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Peter/others.

I think it looks lovely. Very Mac esq though. Was that intentional?

Hi Tom,

Awesome start! I'm glad to see the use of subtle gradients and flat styles rather then overwhelming it with unnecessary icons and such. With that being said, I'm going to give you some feedback according to my personal preference, so you can take it or leave it.
  • The orange stands out way too much. You are calling to much attention to it. Furthermore, you are giving the same color priority to buttons such as "log me out, find job" etc with less important buttons such as "hide". I would use icons for add and hide. There's no need to re use the button style.
  • What does Pause/Stop buttons do? I'm assuming this area is a text carousel or maybe even a marquee? If so, use arrows/icons instead of using the same button style.
  • The green, blue, and red shades need work.
  • As pointed out earlier, you could do better then keeping it so gray tone.
  • Small details such as pixel alignment. The titles in the project/task/job title bar are not centered aligned in the middle.
  • I didn't even see the top nav until I looked for it.
  • is there a reason you have a the your reminders area highlighted w/ a gray background? I think it could be better with simple text highlighting instead of a gray background. Sure, it break it out of the others and gives it some priority, but it's not attractive.

Just a few things! I'll continue to comment if you work on the design and post an updated version.

Thanks Bryan for the comments, I will respond to them in detail a bit later - I also have some html to show.

Please be aware this is a "wire frame" rather than a final product, once functionality and usability have been achieved then I hope to "dress" it a little more.
