Who's tried Ruby on Rails? I checked out the 15-minute blog screencast at http://rubyonrails.org/screencasts and had to put my trousers in the wash afterwards. PHP has a lot to catch up on - if it's going to compete, PEAR will need a library that can do that better and easier.

Rails is just a framework around Ruby, one of a number of them. PHP also has a number of very competent frameworks where it's just as easy to create a blog in 15 minutes, indeed many of the frameworks have "building a blog" as their first demonstrations. Not knocking Rails, Ruby or PHP at all!

I've been very tempted to learn Ruby on Rails as well but I'm not sure if I should keep learning PHP first. What should I do?!?

We use RoR, Python and PHP. My take on things:

1) PHP is a great, stable and very popular language. It does everything you would need and its easy to find help with it.

2) RoR has gained popularity due to it being a fast framework. 37 Signals increased its popularity. We use it for fast projects requiring a launch in a quick timeframe

3) Python. VERY powerful and easy to program. My favourite, but its best used for processing and back-end requirements

Hope this helps
