Just wondering what you all use here, to run php on your localhost. Do you use any prepackaged solutions or do you install Apache, PHP, MySQL etc... separately? I love XAMPP but haven't tried anything else really.

I use what came with Fedora (9. With Special Bits.) - including SELinux, which completely inhibits almost all web development on my localhost.localdomain.

I initially worked with Xampp. The structure of it is clean and user-friendly, but I never thought it to be effective in the long run.

Since then, I have been using WAMP, and I must say that both are reliable.

I use the Apache and friends that came with Leopard, with some tweaking, and a from-source install of PHP to keep an eye on the bleeding edge.

I've utilized WAMP and MAMP both, but for my localhost, I use the OS X built-in web share with PHP binaries installed as well as using the MySQL installer provided by mysql.com.

As for management of MySQL, I'm using a Cocoa based piece of software called CocoaMySQL.

I definitely recommend this method because of the freedom and not having to run an extra application to test locally. I'm also glad I did this before I ever used MAMP because I would have probably never changed to my current method.
My name is Chet. Please refer to me as such. =)

I used XAMPP until it was started to be a resource hog. I switched to EasyPHP (Windows) and definitely love some of the features included (eg: tray icon that I can right-click to access conf file, phpmyadmin.)

I use MAMP (http://www.mamp.info/en/index.html). I had a try with MAMP Pro and really didn't think that it justified having to pay for it. Lucky for me my friend let me have a go on his laptop (he bought it)!

Xampp or wamp, its down to preference, I personally prefer xampp, it does all I require (but so did wamp), I get the impression a lot of members use linux, which I also use,in which case the above will suffice.

If you ever go about the route of installing each element seperately, it gives you so much more control and a better insight into the syntax required.
