Hey guys,

Looking for some lengthy answers here. Basically what are your views in general on Server Performance and Security. What issues do you think there could be with both of these, and how can they be defended against?

For performance, things I had in mind that can be part of a servers performance is the type of hosting the website has, higher demanding websites will require more from the server, if there server isn't a dedicated, or doesn't have the power behind it to cope with the millions of queries running on it, the performance will suck.

For security, I was thinking of things like software patching, vulnerabilities in code, operating systems in use (and their weaknesses and patches) and weak security (brute forces, injections etc..).

These are kind of things running through my mind. What's your opinions on the things I've listed, and what ways would you go about defending against them.

Look forward to seeing what you have to say.

:)

For me simply because I am not much good at security I outsource security and pay a guy, as for performance I usually buy some real expensive server with some good specs that should have no problem running things.

Ex: I just ordered a server with this kind of processor last night:
Intel Dual Xeon E5520 (2.33GHZ 8MB Cache - HT)

Honestly I have no clue what the difference between that and an Intel Celeron besides the name and cache but I know its better cause of the pricing and simply because its 'newer' hardware.
