I am sure there are other programs besides Adobe apps that could deliver some pretty cool effects. Does anyone else use another program for an added effect like perhaps 3d text, or abstract background?

Depends on your OS really. Pixelmator looks nice for Mac. I just use a lot of 3rd party plugins for Photoshop. Any people here ever work with Fireworks?

Eh, Gimp is like the `free` version of Photoshop. Not sure how powerful the program is though.

@Sam : Will actually look into plugins for Photoshop.

There was a blog post somewhere of the best online graphics editors, which, although not exactly what you want, could be a "different" alternative.

I'll try and find it for you, or make my own.

Edit: Found it! Here you go: http://mashable.com/...mage-editors-2/

I totally forgot about some of those programs. I would like to know if anyone has any experience with Pixelmator because it looks pretty nice.

I have used Fireworks but I prefer Photoshop...

I just downloaded Pixelmator and had a play around with it. It looks amazing, but its certainly inspired by photoshop, although that's not saying photoshop were the first to come up with the ideas!

I really like it, although there's one thing which is annoying me: how do I get text shadows etc?!

Photoshop all the way for me by far, no other program can harness the use of web-ready imagery like it smile.gif

Photoshop is great but I have to say that Fireworks runs a lot better.

Surely that would be "per user"? What are you specs? Maybe if you have a low amount of RAM then it would be better to use Fireworks, but on my macbookpro I dont notice any difference at all..!

I have a macbook with 2gb ram and a 2.6ghz processor and Fireworks runs noticeably faster. + It can save and load .PSD's which is pretty handy.

Photoshop is the main program for a reason. I've seen a lot of people use Illustrator to do sites, but I personally dislike it because it isn't as versatile in terms of color editing and layer styling.

Paint Shop Pro is another that I've messed around with, but again, it doesn't offer the intricacies that Photoshop or illustrator have.

The only other companies I can see MAYBE coming out with something legitimate is Apple and Microsoft.

Of course, you do have 3D programs to render text and shapes, but that's an entirely different niche.

I just saw this today: http://www.sumopaint.com/web/

Thought it looked pretty interesting. I haven't had time to mess around with it, but if anyone else does, please let me know how it goes!
