Just wondering if anyone here uses Perl, knows the language or has an interest in learning? Simply gauging the current level of interest in this topic. So are you a Perl ninja, know enough to hack around in scripts or do you run away and hide behind the sofa if it is ever mentioned?

Forgive my ignorance but what is Perl, and what is it used for?

Perl is a programming language. It has been around since the late '80s and is widely used for creating web sites and applications. Useful links: Perl, Wikipedia

Within the company I work for, the base of every application/site we have is built upon Perl.

Its a bit old school, but still a decent language to have in your locker - just watch out for newer languages that will eventually supersede Perl, it might be worth picking them up instead.

It has a bit of a learning curve as well, if my memory serves me right - most Perl coders are dedicated to Perl only.

Perl is sadly falling behind in language design. It needs to catch up to Python, really. It's a much nicer language than Python, except for its package system which is rather ugly and confusing.

As an aside, I'd quite like to get a proper hold on Lisp. Anyone?

Perl is a high-level, general-purpose, interpreted, dynamic programming language. Perl was originally developed by Larry Wall in 1987 as a general-purpose Unix scripting language to make report processing easier and the use of Perl includes powerful tools for processing text that make it ideal for working with HTML, XML, and all other mark-up and natural languages
